Titles About The End Of Time
Where does the time go? “The End Of Time” presents an unusual alternate to the standard way of viewing the four-dimensional universe (three spatial dimensions and time), beginning with how our perception of time is formed. Time does not exist apart from events: the motions of the sun and the stars, the mechanical movement of a clock. Rather than truly feeling the passing of time, we merely note changes in our surroundings, described by the author as a series of “Nows,” like frames of a motion picture. Not only do Nows exist for the events that actually occur, but a large number of Nows represent alternate possibilities, inhabiting a land called Platonia. Which Nows become our perceived reality? The rule of the author gives is, “only the probable is experienced.” In the “macro” world, the author addresses determinism, Newtonian mechanics and the second law of thermodynamics as they relate to his theory of Nows. In the quantum mechanical realm, he ties his theory of time to the Schrodinger Equation in its various forms.
Three days after terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the author discovered that he had prostate cancer. As America was rebuilding, he emerged from months of treatment with a “reprieve” from his disease. He emerged as well with this remarkable book of hard won insights about how we get to our end and what we learn along the way. “The End of Time” is a meditation on subjects ranging from what parents inadvertently teach us in their deaths, to the forbidding reality of the cancer ward and the way in which figures like Mohammed Atta use death to become gods of their own mad creation.
This DVD “The End of Time” travels the planet, from the CERN particle accelerator outside Geneva to the lava flows of Hawaii, from a disintegrating Detroit where Henry Ford built his first factory to the tree where Buddha was enlightened. Both mind-expanding and eerily familiar, this film explores the links between renewal and destruction, between primordial mysticism and the furthest reaches of modern science.
How did the universe begin—and what made its start possible? Does time always flow forward? Is the universe unending—or are there boundaries? Are there other dimensions in space? What will happen when we reach The End Of Time?
What is time? This deceptively simple question is the single most important problem facing science as we probe more deeply into the fundamentals of the universe. All of the mysteries physicists and cosmologists face—from the Big Bang to the future of the universe, from the puzzles of quantum physics to the unification of forces and particles—come down to the nature of time. The fact that time is real may seem obvious. But most physicists, from Newton to Einstein to today’s quantum theorists, have seen things differently. The scientific case for time being an illusion and The End Of Time are formidable.
